Commander Reclaim Ruins Planetary Annihilation [updated]

UPDATE: a video demonstrating Com Reclaim Fix has been added to the article.

Over time every RTS develops a meta; units come into favour and fall out of it, people develop new tactics which defeat the old. An RTS doesn’t become stale until a strategy emerges that is so dominant is becomes required above all others.

Commander Reclaim

In the article Commander Reclaim: How To Ruin PA, elodea makes the argument that Commander reclaim meets these criteria. A strategy which comes off the back of changes designed to make the Commander harder to repair or reclaim to death, earlier this year Qzipco discovered that it could be used as a means to jump start your economy.

Elodea walks you through what he sees as the problem and proposes some fixes for it. Check out the full article and let us know your thoughts.

Interview with PA: TITANS Project Leads

Planetary Annihilation: TITANS has launched. On the day we hosted a livestream and ran a number of public games. We had an opportunity to interview the Project Leads, Tom Vinita and Steve Thompson of Uber Entertainment. We asked them about the design considerations, the process, the changes, and of course, what their favourite unit was.

We’d like to apologise in advance for the noise during the interview. We were speaking to them literally an hour after the launch, so they’d been rather busy and we didn’t get much time for a proper soundcheck.

We also hosted a number of public games that day to celebrate the launch of Planetary Annihilation: TITANS. Check them out on the videos page. And have a look at Planetary Annihilation: TITANS article which details all the changes in this expansion.

Communication and Teamwork in Planetary Annihilation

c_t_sum_title

(P)Jonasmod of Promethean has written up an article called Communication and Teamwork in Planetary Annihilation on how to succeed in team games. It’s all about, you guessed it, communication and teamwork. Come learn from this veteran of the Clan Wars.

“I’m (P)Jonasmod. I’ve played Planetary Annihilation since mid-beta and my favourite game mode is 2v2, shared armies. I’ve participated in a couple of tournaments, am a senior member of the Promethean Clan and have played in Clan Wars season one.

I’ve gained some respect from being able to beat players far better than me together with my teammate, (P)Killander.

The key to victory is communication. I will share how we communicate and what kind of information you should share with your partner during a game.”

Moving On Up – Improving Planetary Annihilation’s Ranking System

There have been a number of posts on the forum recently regarding the ladder:

I struck up a discussion with top players (Top. Players.) elodea and yaegz, along with stats enthusiast lokiCML about what was really wrong with the ladder (if anything) and how it could be resolved.

The result is Moving On Up – Improving Planetary Annihilation’s Ranking System, an article which covers the following:

  • Glicko
  • Limitations of Glicko
  • The Planetary Annihilation ladder
  • Problems with the Planetary Annihilation ladder
  • The Starcraft 2 ladder
  • Suggested changes to:
    • Improve participation
    • Resolve ladder anxiety
    • Provide better match making accuracy
    • Prevent smurfs interfering with other players’ progress

We hope you’ll take the time to read through this. The intention is not just to point out problems, but to justify why they should be considered problems and then to provide actionable solutions.

We have words for you. Find them in the new articles section.

We’ve added a new section to the site called articles, look for it up on the top menu. Here we’ll be collecting opinion pieces from both eXodus staff and top players (sometimes these two things even overlap!) within the community. Be it balance, modding, insights into the community, or anything else that comes to mind, it’ll be found in here.

Mini Mods Mayhem tournament banner

To kick things off check out the Mini Mods Spotlight, an article to help get you prepared for this weekend’s Mini Mod Mayhem tournament. And if you haven’t signed up already don’t worry, there’s still time. Don’t be scared, it’s going to be great fun.

We’ve also got my article on why expansion is dead and how to fix it, and expect a new piece soon from a top player on the intricacies of maps.
